Underground and rail

My journey to the east and back usually involves also a ride through the Budapest underground, the dim underbelly of this cultural, political and commercial capital. Known for its vintage appearance, the entire underground has a certain retro charm to it, that will under the right circumstances quickly creep into an eerie blend of solitude, silence and darkness, provoking sensations of uneasiness, even dread.

Descending into this popular and fast method of commuting in a city of almost two millions, I would expect to run into swarming masses of rushing fellow metro users any time of day, but in my experience, things are like this only during the rush hours. I found myself often completely alone, waiting for the train at the quiet, desolate station, devoid of any motion and sound, except for the faint howling of the artificially induced draft. Many old trains are still in use, exhibiting wonderful decaying textures and classy interior design, a joy for photographers.

I hope to cross this part of the journey some day in the future without having an uncomfortable backpack on my shoulders and hauling heavy luggage behind me.

Maria and the old city

I met Maria for the first time in the early 90's. We were classmates for at least a year, but we didn't get to know each other too well because our ways parted when I changed school.
We met again in high-school, as classmates, and soon became desk-mates and best friends.
Since then, she's always been by my side, no matter what, and continues to amaze me with her selflessness, kindness, delicacy and strength. Besides all these attributes (that are eventually mere understatements) she is also a very natural model and a pleasure to photograph.
A few months ago, on a Sunday afternoon, we decided to go out for a walk around the historic centre of Sibiu. The walk turned into one of the most fun photo-sessions we had and I think the photos speak for themselves.
Thank you, Maria.

Liana

A photosession on a late summer afternoon at the lakes nearby, with the most patient model I have ever worked with: my sister.
She has been with me from the start of my photography journey, bravely enduring my experiments and more or less crazy ideas, providing me with constructive criticism, as well as with heart-warming appreciation. Besides this, she has always been supportive of our Eastwest initiatives, no matter how unrealistic they might have appeared a while ago, eventually becoming our very own PR agent. :)
There goes a big, fat Thank You to her along with the promise (or threat) of a soon-to-come studio-strobe-lit photosession.
